The National Christmas Tree
The Lighting of the National Christmas Tree marks the official beginning of Christmas season here in Washington, DC. This year’s lighting ceremony takes place on Dec. 5. Although free tickets to the Lighting Ceremony were awarded through an online lottery in October, you can visit the lit-up tree any time after for free! It’s located on the south side of the White House on what’s called the Ellipse. The National Christmas Tree is surrounded by trees decorated with handmade ornaments from 56 U.S. states and territories and is accompanied by nightly musical performances throughout the holiday season. The display is open from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m., while the National Christmas Tree is lit each day from 4:30-10 p.m.
Capitol Christmas Tree
Another place to see a Christmas tree lighting is at the U.S. Capitol! The tree will be lit on the west side of the Capitol and has been a tradition since the first time it was lit in 1964. Called “The People’s Tree” and chosen from a different national forest each year, this year’s tree is from Carson National Forest in New Mexico. The tree will be lit by the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, on Wednesday, December 4, 2019, during a ceremony on the West Front Lawn beginning at 5 p.m. These events are free and open to the public. The tree will be lit from nightfall until 11 p.m. each evening through January 1, 2020.
Holiday Lights Tours
One custom many families enjoy is taking a limo or mini passenger bus to tour the holiday lights in the DC Metro area. There are a number of neighborhoods that cater to this every year.
Georgetown GLOW
Georgetown GLOW, an annual outdoor light art experience that takes place from Dec. 6 to Jan. 5, displays unique, illuminated artworks from over a dozen artists from around the world. Georgetown GLOW has proven to be such a hit that it’s now a month-long celebration (from 5-10 p.m. each day).
